Awareness of Breath

7 practices designed to soothe the nervous system and help you come into better relaxation and calm

Day 3 - Awarnessof Breath

A simple meditation, again using our breath as an anchor

The Practice

• Find somewhere you are not going to be disturbed

• Sit or lie down, with a straight comfortable spine

• Close your eyes and focus only on the breath coming in and out of your nostrils. Notice if it’s fast or slow, hot or cold, if it has a pattern or shape. Don’t force anything, just notice

• When your mind wanders (which it will!) just notice where you have been and gently bring your focus back to your breath

• Start with 5 minutes a day see how it feels. Distractions and thoughts will always come, regardless of how long you practice, so just notice these with softness and without judgement

The Logic

• Regular meditation can help regulate the nervous system and decrease stress

• You may find that in time your focus improves as you are able to bring this format into your everday life

• A practice that can ripple into your life. The breath is constant and if we can centre through it we can bring more calm and clarity into our everyday lives. BUT as I have learned - if you don’t practice this in the easy times then you’ve no hope of finding it in the stressful ones!
